Me on the inside :

Haiqing Liang (she/her) is a theatre director born in China, raised in Singapore, and trained in the UK. Her experiences navigating and adapting across different social and cultural systems have instilled in her a unique perspective. She believes that systems are constructed to serve those in power and, hence, should be questioned, reimagined, or dismantled. This belief fuels her politically attuned, emotionally honest practice, challenging dominant narratives and re-lenses familiar structures with nuance and urgency.

She believes meaningful change begins at the level of individual consciousness—when enough people start to see, feel, and imagine differently, systems can shift. Her work centres the personal as a site of resistance and transformation. She works across contemporary plays, devised theatre, and new writing, crafting instinct-led pieces that dive into the undercurrents of human experience: what we hide, what we yearn for, and why we choose what we choose.

Haiqing describes her style as 'brutal fluffiness'—where tenderness carries teeth, and pain is delivered with a gentle hand. Her work is often disarmingly sincere, visually visceral, sensorially overwhelming, choreo-poetic, and thought-provoking. She once created a piece that involved 30 soft toys (MaMa), and another that cheekily invited the audience to become pieces of furniture onstage (Just Kidding!). She is drawn to scenography with dramaturgical weight—design components that can be activated, reinterpreted, and transformed throughout performance.

In the room, Haiqing adopts a games-driven, consent-based rehearsal process to create a safe and bold environment where all collaborators feel empowered to take creative risks. Her approach is deeply collaborative; she doesn’t direct at people, but with them.

Alongside directing, Haiqing is also a committed theatre producer and workshop facilitator for youth and community-based theatre. She believes theatre is not just an art form but a way of thinking—and, as such, should be inclusive and accessible to all.
