The Homecoming (Conceptual)

I adapted The Homecoming through a racial lens, and it explores the intersectionality of racism and sexism in contemporary society. This classic by Pinter originally tells the story of Ruth, a woman navigating power dynamics in her husband’s all-male household. Her struggles for agency within a patriarchal system resonated with the challenges faced by East Asian women within white male-dominated industries.

This adaptation is set in contemporary Britain, reframing the family butcher business as a small-scale pornographic film studio. I have deliberately set the performance against the backdrop of the erotic industry because it is easy to get away with racism when it comes to pornographic material, but it will perpetuate the legitimacy of the white male gaze in real life, which sometimes exists in a form so implicit that it could not be reported, but victims are forced to endure it.
